Project Overview
Project Overview
Unfortunately, due to privacy reasons, I can’t show some parts of the work that I did at Linarc. You’ll just have to trust that I actually did quite a lot during my 1 year at Linarc. Linarc is a cloud-based collaborative construction management software that intends to give teams real-time access to project data wherever there is an Internet connection. The tool brings together several different user personas (Foreman, General Contractors, Subcontractors, Architects, Supervisors, and Project Owners) involved in a construction project.
My Responsibilities
I joined Linarc in August 2020 while the product was still in the early stages of development. Therefore, I had the chance to build something from scratch and set the design language for the company. I worked on multiple internal products, primarily focused on building a suite of enterprise-level construction apps that aid in construction project management. I created wireframes, prototypes and mockups that explained the functionality of the product in an understandable way. In order to make sure that the design is technically possible and implemented properly, I closely collaborated with the developers and other stakeholders. Apart from that, I also had daily meetings with the CEO to discuss design changes and product features. In addition, I oversaw a design intern's daily tasks to make sure their work met the organization's objectives. During my time at Linarc, I have designed interfaces for both desktop and mobile software, built design systems, analysed market competitors, and created user flows and information architecture.

Product Mission
Linarc’s mission is to help users deliver construction projects on time, with high quality and on-site safety. With the innovation and intuition of data-driven decisions, Linarc’s construction management software is purpose-built for the construction industry. Our long-term goal is to support technology needs with Linarc’s integrated construction management solutions no matter if you are owner/developer, contractor, professional, or stakeholder

Who is our Target Audience?
Linarc platform is a collaborative project workspace and supports the needs of prime and speciality prime & speciality contractors. Our customers are in the small to mid-market with revenues from 20 million to about 250 million, that’s our sweet spot. We also target channel partners, resellers and owner consultants.
Discovered User Problems
Fragmented Communication: Users expressed frustration with the fragmented communication channels in traditional construction management processes. Important information was scattered across emails, phone calls, and physical documents, leading to misunderstandings and delays in project timelines.
Lack of Real-Time Data Access: Users, particularly project owners and supervisors, highlighted the challenge of accessing real-time project data while on-site. Without immediate access to updated plans, schedules, and progress reports, they struggled to make informed decisions and address issues promptly.
Difficulty in Collaboration: Various user personas, such as architects, subcontractors, and foremen, found it challenging to collaborate effectively due to the lack of a centralized platform. Coordinating tasks, sharing documents, and tracking changes across dispersed teams proved to be cumbersome and time-consuming.
Complexity in Document Management: Users encountered difficulties in managing and organizing project documents, drawings, and specifications. Version control issues, misplaced files, and outdated information led to confusion and errors in project execution.
Inefficient Reporting Processes: Users expressed frustration with the manual and time-consuming reporting processes involved in construction management. Generating progress reports, safety inspections, and change orders required significant administrative effort and often led to inaccuracies and delays.
Poor Mobile Experience: Users emphasized the need for a mobile-friendly solution that would allow them to access project data and collaborate with team members while on the go. Existing mobile interfaces were either non-existent or poorly optimized, hindering productivity and responsiveness.
Outcomes
An all-in-one construction management solution that eliminates the need for multiple systems. Linarc has built-in features that provide everything required to manage construction projects successfully in a single, intuitive, easy-to-use platform. Taking into account the user feedback, understanding user pain points we have a built the perfect solution that will technologize the construction industry. Linarc went on to be named to Construction Executive Magazine’s 2023 Top Technology Construction Firms.
Toolbox
Toolbox
The toolbox shows the main framework of the application and the features that come with it. The toolbox represents the culmination of extensive user research and close collaboration with stakeholders. It represents Linarc's dedication to providing teams with the resources they require to improve collaboration, streamline communication, and access real-time project data from any location. From communication and collaboration tools to document and crew management capabilities, the toolbox encapsulates the core elements that drive efficiency, transparency, and success in construction projects.

Wireframes
Through wireframing, we navigated through various design possibilities, refining and iterating upon our ideas based on customer feedback and usability considerations. Each wireframe iteration served as a stepping stone towards achieving a cohesive and user-friendly interface that caters to the diverse needs of construction project stakeholders.
This section offers a glimpse into the evolution of Linarc's interface design, showcasing the progression from initial wireframe sketches to refined mockups.

High-Fidelity Prototype
These are close to final version of the product images. The following mockups shows an overview of how we addressed the discovered user problems. Unfortunately, I had to leave Linarc before the release of the product to pursue my Master’s in Germany. But Linarc successfully launched in August 2022 and i’ve heard its doing well in the market.
Enabling efficient collaboration between teams
A construction project involves several different personas and it is important to keep everyone informed and connected to make progress. Which is why we built a unified data and workflow platform. A project workspace is a shared collaborative space available to every team member chosen by the product owner, to share documents, add comments and track progress.

Context-aware collaboration allows users to connect easily with the right team members to start a conversation, share a markup, or resolve an issue within any process.

Real-time Data Access
The communication between Field and Office is a key concern for any construction project. We bridge this gap with our mobile application that shares the real-time data to the office. It is easier for Project owners to track and manage crew, equipments, materials, schedules and tasks all through the software.

Reports and Document Management
We built powerful report builder that creates project reports in a single click. Plenty of research went into designing the reports with the vital informations. These reports not only furnish essential information, but also serve as a detailed historical record, supporting legal compliance, facilitating dispute resolution, and ensuring financial transparency.

With Linarc’s document management system, we made sure that every document a user will need will be exactly where it’s supposed be. The document will also have clear marking and revision so that the user will not spend much time looking to find the right document.

Native mobile apps to stay connected everywhere
The main goal of the mobile app is to connect the office to the field, increase field engagement and capture organic data. User will be able to stay engaged and make critical decisions from anywhere. Unlike other companies where a user will need different apps to perform different tasks, Linarc’s mobile apps includes schedulers, timecard, submittal and RFI workflow management, dispatch, and more.

Learnings & Challenges
During my time at Linarc as a UX Engineer, I had the opportunity to grow both professionally and personally. Working in a dynamic environment with a focus on the construction industry presented its own set of challenges and learning experiences.
I learned to analyse the market, understand the user needs and incorporate customer feedback into the design process. I was also able to strengthen my communication and interpersonal skills because of the collaborative work environment. I closely collaborated with cross-functional teams, including stakeholders and developers to gather feedback and communicate design proposals. I understood the importance of clear communication to ensure smooth project progress .
As someone without a background in the construction industry, designing software tailored to meet the specific needs of this industry initially posed a considerable challenge. I had a hard time to understand the different aspects of a construction project. There is just so much happening from pre-construction to post-construction. But with perseverance and time, I eventually conquered these challenges, improved my abilities, and made progress.
Another challenge I faced was with user testing. Since it was a startup there was simply no budget for proper user testing. Therefore, I only had the opportunity to do very little user testing. And the difficulties that came with being in a small design team of two were also significant. Time management and prioritizing became crucial skills considering the wide range of responsibilities and projects. I had to find a balance between meeting deadlines and ensuring high-quality work. I steadily improved at handling my workload and producing quality output.
